The BTU's Committee of Political Education / Teachers in Goverment and Education Reform "All politics is local!" We have heard all too often that teachers don't need to be politically active. Yet policies and legislation have created a world for teachers that make it almost impossible for them to do their jobs successfully. It takes legislation to remove those impediments. We help elect strong advocates for public education. Their support of education issues largely results from our political influence. Furthermore, teacher involvement in the legislative process protects and preserves collective bargaining in Florida. To be successful, we must be a viable, visible political entity. Voluntary contributions by COPE members provide clear evidence of their commitment and support. Donations of just 50 cents per pay period are used to contribute to the campaigns of candidates who support our educational causes. COPE donations empower a greater collective voice for all members. Elected officials must clearly recognize the link between the union's political influence and its legislative program.
